Helping owners of retriever breeds build calm, confident companions through understanding, kindness and clear communication.

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

Perhaps your dog pulls on the lead and seems to forget that you are even there.

Maybe they jump all over visitors because they are simply too excited to contain themselves.

Perhaps recall disappears the moment something more interesting catches their attention.

Or perhaps you sometimes find yourself wondering why your retriever behaves so differently from the dogs you see around you.

Retrievers are intelligent, energetic dogs with powerful natural instincts. Those instincts can lead to frustration and confusion when we don’t fully understand themโ€”but they can also become the foundation for calm, enjoyable training.

This course will help you see your dog through a different lens and begin building the connection that every retriever owner hopes for.

You are not failing.

What You’ll Learn

Over four short lessons, you’ll discover why retrievers think and behave the way they doโ€”and how understanding their natural instincts can transform the way you train.

You’ll learn:

โœ“ Why many common training problems are rooted in natural retriever instincts.

โœ“ How positive reinforcement and clear communication create calmer, more reliable behaviour.

โœ“ Why training is about building understanding, not simply giving commands.

โœ“ How small, consistent steps lead to lasting progress.

โœ“ Why calmness, focus and self-control can all be taught.

โœ“ How to begin building the partnership you want with your dog.

By the end of the course, you’ll see your retriever differentlyโ€”and you’ll have a clearer idea of how to move forward together.

Meet Gerry

For more than forty-five years, I have been sharing my experience of training retrievers and helping owners develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to train their own dogs.

As a qualified positive reinforcement trainer, lifelong retriever owner and former coach and educator, I have seen first-hand the joy that comes when owners begin to understand not just how to train their dogs, but why their dogs behave the way they do.

Unlike many trainers, I do not take dogs away for training. I believe owners deserve the opportunity to build a strong relationship with their own dog and to develop the skills needed to train with confidence. My role is to provide guidance, encouragement and practical support along the way.

My approach is built on a simple belief: training should be based on understanding, communication and kindnessโ€”not force or frustration.

Retrievers are intelligent, enthusiastic dogs with powerful natural instincts. When those instincts are understood and channelled correctly, they become the foundation for calm, reliable behaviour and a stronger partnership between dog and owner.

Through my books, courses and The Calm Retriever Club, my aim is simple:

To help owners of retriever breeds build calm, confident companions through instinct-based training.

Because good training is not about controlling your dog.

It is about learning to work together

The Four Lessons

Lesson 1: You Are Not Failing

Discover why so many retriever owners struggle with training and why the problem is often not a lack of effort, but a lack of understanding. Learn why your dog’s behaviour makes more sense than you might think.

Lesson 2: Why Retrievers Are Different

Explore the natural instincts that make retrievers such wonderful companionsโ€”and sometimes such challenging ones. Understand how instinct shapes behaviour, attention and learning.

Lesson 3: Training Is Communication

Learn why effective training is about far more than giving commands. Discover how clear communication, positive reinforcement and realistic expectations help dogs learn and thrive.

Lesson 4: Your Journey Starts Here

Bring everything together and begin to see a path forward. Discover how small, consistent steps can help you build the calm, confident relationship you want with your dog.

Each lesson is designed to build your understanding and give you the confidence to train with patience, kindness and clarity.

Your Journey Starts Here

Every calm, confident retriever begins with understanding.

This free course will help you see your dog differently, understand the instincts that shape their behaviour and begin building the partnership you have always wanted.

You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need expensive equipment. And you certainly don’t need to have all the answers before you begin.

You simply need a willingness to learn and the patience to take one small step at a time.

The journey towards a calmer, happier and more responsive retriever starts here.
